Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj — NETFLIX
An immersive LED stage environment featuring concave banner displays and a diamond-shaped LED floor, designed to integrate graphics, data, and video directly into the storytelling of Netflix’s Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
PROJECT BRIEF & CHALLANGES
Production designer Marc Janowitz was tasked with creating a set capable of supporting the rich media and fast-changing content central to Netflix’s Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. Each episode combines infographics, data, and video to explore modern culture, politics, and global news through Minhaj’s distinctive mix of comedy and storytelling.
The design needed to move beyond a conventional background display and instead create an environment that could adapt to the evolving themes of each weekly episode. Because Minhaj performs in close proximity to both cameras and screens, the system also needed to address challenges such as moiré and image clarity during filming.
APPROACH
During the design and development process, 5 TEN worked with Janowitz, producer Art & Industry, and the Netflix production team to evaluate LED display technologies and determine the best solution for the set.
Because moiré had been a significant challenge during filming of Minhaj’s stand-up special Homecoming King, camera testing became an important part of the process. At the 5 TEN studio, multiple LED resolutions were tested under studio conditions to understand how each product would perform on camera and to identify the most suitable configuration.
SOLUTION
The final design featured a main display constructed from 1.9 mm LED panels, paired with 22° concave banner displays extending outward from the center wall and wrapping the set.
Additional elements included a diamond-shaped LED floor using 4.7 mm panels with triangular acrylic diffusers, a 25 mm LED display behind the main wall, and diffused LED strips integrated throughout the backdrop and stage edge.
To support the show’s fast-moving media content, the system utilized disguise 4x4 media servers together with a Barco S3 image processor. 5 TEN also designed and installed the full video infrastructure for the production, including routing, switching, LED processing, monitoring, and programming systems.
